SOCIAL ISOLATION WITH KIDS: A LIST OF BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ TOGETHER

The Coronavirus has forced a lot of people to remain home for an undetermined amount of time. Families are getting time together that they have not gotten without a planned vacation. Family meals and movie nights are beginning to take place across the world. Now is the time to start some new traditions.

Children do not need to be alarmed by the situation going on in the world right now. Take this time to read books together. This will help them with their reading comprehension, but at the same time, give them some lessons that they can use in everyday life.

DORIS THE BOOKASAURUS BY DIANA MURRAY

Doris is a dinosaur who loves books. Her brothers like nothing more than to play with their blocks and other games. Doris shares a pirate book with them, and they embark on a journey to find the treasure.

This book will take you and your children on an adventure and show your children what imagination can do when you allow it to take control.

This book is a bunch of nonsense rhyming, but it is sure to give your child a laugh. Try to read it at the typical Dr. Seuss pace and watch your children explode in laughter as you stumble over your own tongue in the process.

The Rainbow Fish is a tale of how learning to share something that you love can make you happy. Rainbow Fish had beautiful sparkling scales that he was so proud of. When the other fish ask him for one, he rudely refuses. He seeks the advice of a wise octopus who tells him to be happy he must share them.

This book will teach your children the joys of how sharing can bring happiness.

I HAVE AN IDEA! BY HERVÈ TULLET

This is an interactive book that you can do with your child while you read it. It encourages imagination and finding answers in the world around your child.

SHERM THE GERM BY JOHN HUTTON

A good book for showing the life cycle of getting sick and getting better. This is the perfect book to read with your child right now. You can use it as a way to explain why good hand hygiene is essential, and then create a lesson on adequately washing their hands.

PETE THE CAT AND HIS MAGIC SUNGLASSES BY JAMES AND KIMBERLY DEAN

You can’t go wrong with Pete the Cat books. They usually always have an underlying meaning that is useful to children of all ages. In this book, Pete wakes up grumpy, but with the help of his magical sunglasses, he sees the world in a new light. This can show your children that they can turn their grumpy day into a positive one with their view on things.

This is not a book that can be read in one sitting, but it is an excellent adventure the whole family can enjoy. Afterward, you and your family can sit down with some chocolate bars and watch the movie!

THE MAGIC TREEHOUSE SERIES BY MARY POPE OSBORNE

Although this is a series for older children, it is still a good read-a-long for you to do with your younger children. Jack and Annie go on a magical adventure through the books that they find in a magic treehouse. Books like this can help your younger children develop a more extensive vocabulary and the understanding of more complex words.

DICK AND JANE: FUN WHEREVER WE ARE BY GROSSET & DUNLAP

The Dick and Jane books will always be classics. They are great for teaching children how to read. This book is a compilation of the original Dick and Jane texts. Have your child read along with you. This will help them form a general memorization of common words.

The important thing for you to remember while you are in quarantine is that you are in charge of your child’s education. Children learn great things through books. Reading and writing go hand in hand. Start reading now with your child and cultivate their thirst for knowledge. There is no better way to beat quarantine and isolation than getting away through your imagination and a great book.
